Is there a hierarchy in the perfume community? What are your thoughts on it?
Why does the world have such a thing as a hierarchy?
The creation of a hierarchy is essentially a way to distinguish between "us" and "them," and to derive a sense of superiority from group identity. In reality, hierarchies exist in every community because it is inherent in human nature.
| So what does the current hierarchy in the perfume community look like?
First and foremost, let me state that the fragrance community does not endorse the behavior of creating hierarchies. This article is an analysis and observation, aimed at fostering rational discussions.
01
Bottom: Counterfeit perfumes, miscellaneous brands, imitations, and domestically-produced small brands that heavily rely on plagiarism
These kinds of fragrances often lack proper safety testing and cannot guarantee safety, let alone quality. It is not worth spending money on fake and inferior products concocted from low-grade alcohol and fragrance. It would be better to purchase affordable samples of authentic perfumes, as they offer better value for money.
02
Second Tier: Affordable commercially-available fragrances
This tier encompasses brands like Adidas, CK, Davidoff, and 4711. However, there are also many excellent fragrances priced around 100 RMB, such as CK One, Davidoff Cool Water, Kenzo Flower, and Moschino Cheap & Chic. These options are great for fragrance beginners, students, and those on a limited budget.
03
Third Tier: Designer fragrances
These fragrances have a wide acceptance and are popular in the market. Examples include Bleu de Chanel, Terre d'Hermes, Black Opium, and Sauvage. Due to their popularity, they give off a mass-market impression and lack exclusivity.
Although they are considered designer fragrances, given the current level of perfume usage among Chinese consumers, the chances of encountering someone wearing the same fragrance are still relatively low. Moreover, the reason why these fragrances have become popular is because they possess excellent product performance, high fragrance acceptance, and unique characteristics.
04
Fourth Tier: Influencer and niche fragrances
This tier gathers well-known domestic niche fragrance brands such as Lushidan, Ati Xian, Bairuiduo, Pan Hailigen, and Tiputico. They often engage in heated arguments with enthusiasts of designer fragrances. Those who enjoy niche fragrances may consider those who prefer designer fragrances as unrefined, while those who prefer designer fragrances may see niche fragrance enthusiasts as pretentious.
In reality, there is no inherent superiority or inferiority between niche and designer fragrances. The main difference lies in the size of the brand. Even the most famous classic perfume house, Guerlain, is a commercial brand. Therefore, there is no notion of one being more upscale than the other.
05
Fifth Tier: Niche artisanal fragrances
Examples include Tauerville, Papillon, Empire of Scents, and Menti Tolosa. These brands are usually beloved by experienced fragrance connoisseurs with specific tastes.
They do not consider market demand or mass acceptance, resulting in more personalized fragrance styles and smaller brand sizes. Their scarcity adds to their exclusivity and elevated status.
06
The Apex of the Pyramid: Luxury fragrances, custom/limited edition fragrances, and rare vintage fragrances
This is the realm of luxury players. Representative brands of luxury fragrances include Jean Patou, Jacques Fath, and Roja Dove Perfumes, with prices that easily reach thousands of dollars. There are also custom/limited edition fragrances, such as Clive Christian No. 1 Imperial Majesty, which has a 500ml bottle priced at $196,048.22, roughly equivalent to $42.01 per spray.
Furthermore, there are rare vintage fragrances that are no longer in production and have been produced in past years, making their prices difficult to estimate. Fragrance enthusiasts who appreciate these high-end fragrances and older scents possess profound knowledge and seek out "pearls in the sea" through various means. However, they generally refrain from engaging in mutual contemptuous behavior.
How do you view the existence of the hierarchy in the perfume community?
In my opinion, fragrances are simply a matter of personal preference and affordability. Therefore, there is no need to doubt oneself or feel inferior due to opinions that attempt to showcase a sense of superiority. I also urge everyone to acknowledge and respect their own personal preferences while also respecting the preferences of others.
